Vitamin D and Multivitamins: Do You Need Both?

Check your multivitamin’s label before adding a separate vitamin D supplement. If it already provides the amount appropriate for your circumstances, another product may be unnecessary. The key is the vitamin D amount in your complete daily serving.

What is the UK advice for adults?

The NHS advises considering a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during autumn and winter. Some people should consider supplementation throughout the year, including those with little sunlight exposure and people with darker skin. Individual medical advice can differ.

Read the amount, not just the percentage

Look for vitamin D in the nutrient table. The amount may be written in micrograms (µg or mcg) or international units (IU): 10µg equals 400 IU. Check whether the stated figure is per capsule or per daily portion.

A percentage NRV is a labelling reference, not a personalised dose. Our guide to NRV on vitamin labels explains that distinction.

A simple way to check for overlap

  1. Find the recommended daily portion of your multivitamin.
  2. Find the vitamin D amount for that portion.
  3. List the vitamin D in any separate vitamin D, calcium combination or other supplement you use.
  4. For a day and night pack, check both formulas and whether the table already shows their combined total.
  5. Compare the total with the advice appropriate for you; ask a pharmacist if you are unsure.

Example: a hypothetical multivitamin providing 10µg per daily portion plus a separate supplement providing 10µg gives a total of 20µg from those supplements. Adding the second product doubles the amount; it does not automatically make the routine more suitable. This is an arithmetic example, not a dosing recommendation.

When to get individual advice

Follow a clinician’s instructions if you have been prescribed vitamin D or are being treated for a deficiency. Do not replace prescribed treatment with a standard multivitamin. Check with a healthcare professional if you have a medical condition, take medicines or are unsure about combining products.

The NHS cautions adults against taking more than 100µg (4,000 IU) a day, as excessive intake can be harmful. This is a safety ceiling, not a daily target; some people need a lower limit. Follow any different dose prescribed by your clinician.

Checking a Vitto routine

For VITTOMEN, VITTOWOMEN or VITTOSKIN, use the directions and nutrient amounts on your current pack. Avoid assuming every product in the range contains the same amount.
